We started with one problem. Then we discovered a much bigger opportunity.
Tunzaa launched in 2021 with a simple idea: make it easier for everyday Africans to progressively pay towards products they wanted and purchase them digitally.
That first product gave us something even more valuable: a front-row view of how commerce works across our market. We learned how customers buy, how businesses sell, how payments move, how products are delivered, and how fragmented the infrastructure connecting all of them can be. That experience shaped the Tunzaa we are building today.
2021
Tunzaa launches.
Tunzaa enters the market with a consumer-focused digital commerce experience designed around helping customers progressively pay towards products they want.
Customers are at the centre. Around them, we begin building relationships with merchants, payment providers and other participants required to complete commerce.
The journey begins.
2022–2023
We learn from the market.
As Tunzaa grows, so does our understanding of what sits behind every transaction. A purchase is rarely just a buyer and a seller. It connects:
Customers. Businesses. Payments. Vendors. Technology. Distribution. Delivery. Financial services. Data.
The opportunity becomes bigger than one way of purchasing a product. We begin seeing the infrastructure behind commerce itself as the bigger problem to solve.
2024
We pivot.
Tunzaa begins evolving from a primarily consumer-focused proposition into a broader technology company serving businesses as well as consumers.
Years of operating our own marketplace give us technology, data, partnerships and experience that can solve problems beyond Tunzaa’s original product. A new question begins shaping the company:
What if the infrastructure we built for Tunzaa could power commerce for other businesses too?
The pivot begins.
2025
We build.
Our technology evolves into new products built around some of the biggest components of digital commerce:
Payments. Marketplaces. Vendors. Distribution. Delivery. Financial services.
The technology behind our own marketplace begins becoming infrastructure other businesses can use.
2026
Tunzaa evolves.
Our brand evolves to reflect the company we have become. Tunzaa is now built around three connected platforms — Malipo, powering payments; Soko, connecting commerce; and Mauzo, powering marketplaces. Soko itself evolves from our original marketplace into a broader commerce ecosystem connecting buyers, vendors, payments, delivery, financing and distribution.
From a Product to Infrastructure
The Tunzaa of 2021 helped us understand the problem. The years that followed helped us understand the opportunity. Today, we are building the infrastructure behind how Africa shops, sells and gets paid.
Malipo powers payments.
Soko connects commerce.
Mauzo powers marketplaces.
Together, they are Tunzaa.

1% Better Every Day
The way we have built Tunzaa reflects a simple philosophy: progress compounds. Products improve. Technology evolves. Markets change. Companies grow. So do we.
Mdogo Mdogo is part of Tunzaa’s current growth strategy.
And We’re Still Building
Our next chapter is about making the infrastructure behind digital commerce more accessible to businesses across Africa.
